Hello! My name is Emi, I am originally from Poland and I am currently in my second year at The Courtauld. I have a rather intense passion for chairs: their general aesthetic and design as well as their place in history and today’s society. Without sounding overly dramatic, I believe they are the backbone to our daily life and an aspect too easily overlooked in most ordinary situations. In short, I spend way too much of my time thinking about chairs, hence the birth of this column. Chair of the Week is a peek at some of my personal favourites, chairs that particularly draw in my attention through their unusual histories, materials, production processes and functions.

I am a firm believer in the idea that informative reading shouldn’t have to be dense, therefore I hope my column can be a breath of fresh air between troublesome texts you may encounter in your required reading. Please share any interesting chairs you see with me if you wish – it really brightens my day!

This week I moved into the Courtauld library.  Not literally, although the number of hours I’ve spent tucked away in its nooks and crannies totalled up to considerably more than the time spent at home.  If it weren’t for looming essay deadlines, however, I wouldn’t hav...

If you know me well, you may well be aware that I like chairs.  An awful lot.  And if you don’t know me well at all – hello, I’m Emilia, and chairs are very much my thing.

I don’t want this column to become the usual spiel you’d find on design websites, insid...
